Please keep the following tips in mind:

Never send your checking account number, credit card number, social security
number, passport number, or pension number in an e-mail to anyone.

Do not carry your voter's registration card, your passport, or your social
security card in your wallet or purse. Leave them at home until you need
them, such as on voting day (for a voter's card). Store them in a safe
place to which only you or a trusted individual has access. When travelling
abroad, always carry your passport with you and never leave it anywhere,
particularly in a hotel.

Cross-cut shred all documents that you do not want that contain your
name/address/account numbers on them. Strip-shredding is NOT sufficient.

Cross-cut shred all credit card offers that you do not want. Strip-shredding
is NOT sufficient.

If you would like to stop receiving credit card offers in the mail, write
VOID in big letters through the offer and write REMOVE FROM LIST on the top
of the offer and return the offer in the prepaid return envelope. It will
take a while, but eventually, you'll stop receiving credit card offers.

Reveal your private e-mail address only to trusted individuals. Create a
throwaway e-mail address on a free web site such as hotmail.com or yahoo.com
and use that e-mail address when entering your e-mail address into forms on
web sites. Doing so reduces spam to your private e-mail address greatly.

No New Nuclear Reactors in Florida

I was watching the Newshour on PBS with Jim Lehrer yesterday and a proponent of nuclear power was on the screen claiming that 70% of Americans favor nuclear power. My jaw dropped in disbelief. This morning I wake up and the large daily in Fort Lauderdale has an article on the front page about Jeb Bush supporting and promoting new nuclear reactors for Florida. Are you kidding me? First, I doubt very strongly that 70% of Americans favor nuclear power. Perhaps 70% represents polled energy lobbyists to come up with that figure. Secondly, Florida has a great renewable and completely underutilized natural resource -- the sun and the Governor of this state has done next to nothing to promote the Sun.

Installing Linux on a Toshiba Tecra 500cs laptop without a CD rom drive

I have an old Toshiba Tecra 500cs laptop that does not have a CD rom
drive. I bought a CD rom drive for the floppy drive compartment and
it wouldn't work. I then bought a Backpack Series 6 parallel port CD
rom drive and even that wouldn't work. I attempted various flavors
of linux, various versions of linux, and I even tried BE OS. =) No
luck with anything. I was able to take the hard drive out and put it
in another machine and install linux that way, but it would hang on
booting (particularly with Red Hat 7) and I could not make it
recognize the PCMCIA slot (containing a 3COM network card). The
point is, I have tried a lot of stuff to no avail. Now I am going to
attempt to install linux over nfs, but it doesn't totally satisfy me
because I really want the CD rom to work. I'll be trying this now:

http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/nfs_install.htm

My spouse thinks I should just throw the thing in the trash, but now
its become an obsession with me and I refuse to give up on it.

I even tried blueflops which worked okay, but not with the PCMCIA
slot card or with the cd rom drive.

The whole point here is to get the machine to work with the parallel
port CD rom drive and the PCMCIA slot network card.

Any thoughts?

Daniel

The Numbers That Control Your Life

I found this interesting web site via my pal Stefan at
highprogrammer.
